42 AÑOS DE GRANDEZA

Tal día como hoy hace 42 años, un radioaficionado escocés llamado Paddy Roy Bates puso su pie en un trozo de metal en mitad del Mar del Norte al que decidió denominar Sealand, "la Tierra del Mar". Nadie podía imaginar que ese simple gesto estaba marcando un antes y un después en la historia del Derecho Internacional y al mismo tiempo daba lugar a un orden nuevo en el planeta tierra.

Hoy, 42 años después de aquello, somos muchos los que pensamos que Paddy no actuó en vano, que sus sueños de libertad siguen siendo válidos. Que no fueron presa del olvido de las décadas.

Por eso es por lo que hoy celebramos el Día Nacional Sealandés: para reivindicar la soberanía de una nación. Una soberanía que supone más que un simple añadido en los mapas: supone el triunfo de la libertad por encima de barreras o cortapisas, de la lucha denodada por un ideal. En definitiva, de la realización a la que todo ser humano debe aspirar.

42 YEARS OF GREATNESS

On a day like today 42 years ago, a Scotsman named Paddy Roy Bates put his foot on a piece of metal in the middle of the North Sea. He decided to call her Sealand. Nobody could imagine that this simple gesture was marking a before and an after in the history of international law and also gave rise to a new order on the earth.

Today, 42 years after that, many of us think that Paddy did not act in vain, that their dreams of freedom are still valid. That they did not fall into oblivion of decades.

That is why we now celebrate the Sealand National Day: to reclaim the sovereignty of a nation. A sovereignty that is more than just an added on the maps: it implies the triumph of freedom across the barriers or constraints, the brave struggle for an ideal. In short, the conduct to which every human being should aspire.
